Lunt Silver

George C. Lunt founded the Lunt Silversmith Company, makers of top quality sterling silver cutlery. It remained in the Lunt family for over one century. Unfortunately, during the year 2010, bankruptcy became necessary and all assets went on the auction block. Lunt's competitor, Reed and Barton, purchased the Lunt name and inventory. Less than a dozen employees, including great-grandson James Lunt, went to work for Reed and Barton as a design team that would continue the Lunt style.

Lunt Silver products are highly collectible, due to their exquisite workmanship and intricate designs. In fact, the United States government selected the Lunt Embassy Scroll pattern for flatware to use at Embassy functions worldwide. Highly detailed designs with ornate floral, colonial, classic, regal and other styles sometimes include pierced, open areas on the silverware handles. This displays the finely tuned skills that the Lunt family developed. Lunt helped set the bar for the highest standards of silversmith workmanship and design.

One of the lesser-known facts about antique sterling silver dinnerware and hollowware is that there are so many different utensils specifically designed for use with one food. Some of these include berry spoon, cold meat fork, jelly server, pickle olive fork, bacon fork, asparagus fork and dozens more. Hollowware refers to an item used for serving, including teapots, bowls and trays. Popular gift sets of sterling silverware include a nice selection of serving pieces such as dessert servers, oyster forks, ice scoops, a butter server and sugar spoon.

As advised by the Lunt family, the best way to avoid having to polish sterling silver, which is a tedious job, is to use it daily. Like brass, silver will develop its own patina over time. For utensils that are not for daily use, recommendations call for washing with hot, soapy water and immediately drying afterward. Furthermore, a special airtight storage box or one containing a treated cloth that keeps tarnish from developing is advised.

In addition to sterling silver, Lunt Silversmiths also crafted items out of silver-plate. The difference is how much silver, which is a precious metal, the material contains. Sterling silver is a mixture of 925 parts of pure silver with 75 parts of another metal. It will always have a stamp on the back or bottom that reads either .925 or Sterling. Alternately, silver-plate refers to items that are made from a less expensive metal and then coated with a thin layer of silver. Initially, a layer of silver visually compares to solid sterling silver; however, eventually it rubs off and exposes the inner metal.

Some of the most popular patterns designed by Lunt Silversmiths include Regency Shell, William and Mary, Homes, and Eloquence. All of the patterns are elegant and intricately detailed. Accented with a touch of 24K gold, the Golden Embassy Scroll is otherwise identical to the Embassy Scroll. The number one favorite pattern with customers, and the cornerstone of the Lunt line, is Eloquence. On the open market today, one fork in any of these antique designs can go for hundreds of dollars, dependant on the current commodity price of silver.

Sadly, today Lunt Silversmiths is a design and product development firm only, as per the bankruptcy settlement. Economic recession has severely hurt the demand for sterling silver products, which left Lunt as the only remaining silversmith with production facilities on United States soil. Since 2010, no other silversmiths produce domestically, having moved operations to other parts of the world.
