Dominick and Haff Silver

Dominick & Haff Silver is a high-end silverware manufacturing company that was based and operated in New York from 1868 till 1928, when they merged with Reed and Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts. Founded by Henry Blanchard Dominick and Leroy Haff in 1868, their early silver productions were mainly centered on vinaigrette pieces. They later began to manufacture a vast array of fine quality sterling silver flatware and hollowware pieces that they are widely known for in this modern day. Their pieces ranged from various types of forks, knives, spoons, tea caddies, toothpick holders, and serving platters, and most of the designs on their flatware were named after famous men, kings and queens from around the world.

Design names such as the Alexander; Charles II; Century; Colonial Antique; Cupid; Labors of Cupid; Grape; King; La Salle Chased; Louis XIV; Marie Antoinette; Martha Washington; The Rococo; Virginia, and Renaissance, to name a few, are what their pieces offer. The flatware design called Charles II was named for the king who ruled England, Scotland and Ireland in 1649. This design was created by Gilbert Crowell Jr. in 1894 and has exquisite patterns on the handle. From the cocktail fork, to the nut spoon, to the pie server, every dining flatware imaginable can be found in this design.

The Marie Antoinette design aptly named after the famous French queen, looks very demure in contrast to the controversial character this woman is said to have possessed. The Martha Washington was named after the wife of George Washington, the first president of the United States. This design has very delicate and decorous patterns. The Cupid, and the Labors of Cupid designs created by Dominick & Haff speak for themselves. Named after the Roman mythological god of desire, love and affection, these designs are very intricately woven. The Cupid design has the face of the god, whilst the Labors of Cupid is exquisitely made with the full carved image of Cupid nestling in between the surrounding design.

Dominick & Haff Silver Hollowware

Dominick & Haff Silver's sterling and silverplate hollowware pieces include champagne buckets, food servers, and beverage accessories. A champagne bucket made in 1902 is recorded to have sold for $4,500 at an auction. Besides their flatware and hollowware, are products like silver sterling hand mirrors, hair brushes, nail files and bonbons. When the company merged with Reed & Barton in 1928, they became the largest manufacturer of handmade chests, humidors for cigars, and hardwood flatware in the world.

Some of this company's silver pieces have been displayed in museums. A spectacular silver centerpiece and serving platter with fancy leaf and motif designs are amongst the pieces that are displayed in a museum in North Carolina. The hallmarking of Dominick & Haff Silver is a three linked monogram that consists of the number 925 and the year the piece was made. The number 925 indicates the percentage of pure silver that was used in making the piece. For instance the punched hallmark of 925 and the number 1897 on an item means the piece was made with 92.5 percent of pure silver and was manufactured in 1897.

Dominick & Haff Silver antiques are authentic, beautifully crafted pieces that are truly worth any collectors' money. Their impeccable designs are timeless, and a delight to the eyes of the beholder.
